We are a spiritual community that holds regular worship services which your child will attend. We have a beautiful chapel, ̨ž³UUÖ±²¥’s Chapel, within our school grounds. There are opportunities for families to attend special services throughout the year. Please see below some of our family services for Terms 1 and 2. It is desirable that all students and their families attend these services. The services are great occasions where students can be Baptised, Admitted to Holy Communion or be Confirmed.

Due to the pandemic many of our special services including Baptism, Admission to Holy Communion, Confirmation and some of our family services were cancelled last year. Hopefully we will be able to hold these special services this year. However, please check the eNews and messages for any changes. Please see some key dates, information and opportunities for students and families below.

Term 1

Baptism and Admission to Holy Communion will take place in Term 1 for Years 7 and 8. There will be preparation classes during the lunch break on 23 February, 2 March and 10 March in the school chapel.

Students from Years 7 and 8 are invited to participate in preparation for Baptism and/or Admission at the Years 7/8 Family Service to be held on Wednesday 10 March at 6:00pm in the school chapel.

Confirmation is considered a mature, more adult rite. In 2021 Confirmation is open to students from Year 9 and above or other members of the school community. We will be holding our Confirmation preparation classes during the lunch break on 16 February, 23 February, 2 March and 16 March. The service of Confirmation, with Bishop Jeremy Greaves, will be held on Wednesday 17 March at 6:00pm in ̨ž³UUÖ±²¥’s Chapel.

The Pre-Prep to Year 3 Twilight Family Service will be held on 24 March at 6:00pm. Families and their children are invited to attend this special Family Service.

Term 2

Students in Years 4-6 are invited to participate in preparation for Baptism and Admission to Holy Communion (preparation is done during RVE lessons). The service will take place at the Years 4-6 Family Service to be held on Wednesday 28 April at 6:00pm in the School Chapel. Please note, those Year 4 girls and families who were not baptised and admitted to Holy Communion due to the cancellation last year, will be invited to participate this year.

This year, we have three new staff members in the Boarding House; Hannah Calcino (Year 7 House Mother), Elise Cardamone (Year 9 House Mother) and Molly Wibaux (Years 11/12 House Mother) and we warmly welcome them to our community.

Valuing each girls’ uniqueness is one of the qualities that makes Boarding such a fulfilling experience at ̨ž³UUÖ±²¥’s. The girls this year will be continually be encouraged to believe in their strengths and abilities and accept their individuality. Staff will focus on teaching the girls the vital tools of understanding themselves, how they can connect in healthy ways with others and how they can engage with all members of the Boarding community. Acceptance of all and guiding the girls to embrace diversity and inclusion will be a focus this year in Boarding. We will endeavour to always provide an environment where each girl feels connected and valued.

Intentional Learning is based on having a set of core skills and mindsets to be an effective learner. At the heart of the concept is treating every experience as an opportunity to learn. McKinsey goes on to say that the ability to intentionally learn (anything) is the most important skill to acquire in our new digital age. This concept is not new to ̨ž³UUÖ±²¥’s as this is the premise of our Academic Advising program. Last week, I presented to the Academic Advisors on our staff days and we revisited the important skills and mindsets to be an effective learner and all girls will be challenged to reflect on themselves to set a goal to improve their ability to be an “Intentional learner”.

Resources for Years 11 and 12 Parents

Next week at the Parent Information Evening we will be sharing information from The Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority (QCAA) and the Queensland Tertiary Admissions Centre (QTAC) that informs senior assessment and tertiary entrance. However, if you would like to do some pre-reading, below are two links to information for parents about ATAR and the Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE).

Assessment Planners – Years 11 and 12

Years 11 and 12 students can access a 12-month Assessment Planner on their Year Level POD pages. All assignments and exams for Terms 1 to 4 are recorded so your daughters can begin to plan their study schedules. Effective study habits rely on your daughter’s capacity to prioritise her academic progress and allocate sufficient time for homework and study.

Supervised Study Sessions

Supervised Study Sessions (SSS) will operate out of the Senior Library on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings. Each session runs from 5:00pm to 7:30pm, with students having the option of purchasing dinner from the Boarding House for $10.

For students attending these sessions after an afternoon of sport, transport is available to and from Windsor Park. For those staying on after school to attend SSS, the Senior Library is open until 5:00pm prior to the commencement of the study sessions.

Parents who book their daughters in via Flexischools can feel comfortable knowing that their daughters are receiving academic support but are also interacting with peers in a physically and emotionally safe environment.

Dates for the sessions and when bookings open are below:

Term 1: 1 February - 25 March

Term 2: 27 April - 10 June (except for 3 and 4 May due to the Day/Boarder Weekend)

Term 3: 19 July - 9 September (except for 11 August due to RNA holiday and 2 September due to the student free day)

Term 4: 11 October - 18 November (except for 12 October due to Speech Night)

Please note the following conditions:

1. The booking cut off through Flexischools is 9:00am. This allows extra time for parent/guardians and students to book, enabling us to plan in advance and advise the kitchen on the number of meals that will need to be catered for in the evening. Please note that we can only accept a maximum number of 25 students, so therefore your diligence to book in advance is highly recommended.
2. For bookings that miss the cut off, no dinner will be provided but students are welcome to attend Supervised Study provided the maximum number of students has not been exceeded. An email notifying the school of their attendance is necessary and this will be noted on the Supervisor’s roll.
3. Dinner will be provided at the set time of 6:00pm to allow for the Boarders’ dinner sittings to be finalised.
4. Supervised Study students will occupy the first two tables located on the right-hand side upon entering the Dining Hall. Strict sanitising and social distancing will need to be adhered to. Supervisors have been briefed in this regard.

During these sessions, girls work with tutors to organise a plan of study for the term. This involves the girls looking at their assessment calendar and planning how to ensure they are organised and ready for the next lesson and assessment. The main goal of SSS is to assist girls to revise work covered so far and support and extend their understanding of learning from lessons so they are prepared for assessment.

Parents and teachers share the very important task of educating your daughters and preparing them for the journey they will take in forming their identity as young woman, assisting them to recognise their support networks and having a clear sense of belonging are essential at this time.

• At home, listen, discuss, negotiate and decide together on as many issues as possible.
• Discuss routines with your daughter, talk through her timetable with her and check to see if she is packing her bag each evening for what she will need for the next day. Help her to plan ahead. Ensure all pieces of her uniform are together the evening before. Being organised will assist her to feel she is in control.
• Emphasise the importance of Secondary school. Settling into her academic program is one of her major tasks for the year. Reinforce the importance of engaging with her learning.
• Become familiar with the school and what is available. The Parent Handbook and e-News are a wealth of information about extra-curricular activities, events, assessment procedures, policies and uniform guidelines.

Throughout the year, there will be many opportunities for parents to interact with staff and parents. One such occasion is next week’s Parent Information evening on Thursday 4 February from 6:00 to 8:00pm. This evening provides a wonderful chance to gain valuable information on your daughter’s learning and to connect with other parents.

The Primary Parent Handbook is a useful source of information. All new parents received a hard copy from the class teacher, and it is also available on the POD. I would encourage parents to use the POD constantly as a source of information and ensure that you set notifications for the Primary school class and any groups that your daughter is involved in. Please refer to the as a guide to using the POD and to assist you in setting up the App. The two communication systems work together, and we recommend you have both accessible on your device. Importantly, to receive information regarding the activities and extra-curricular groups your child is involved in, you will need to request to ‘join’ those groups. Instructions on how to do this are included in the attached POD guide. At present, this concerns Primary and Secondary Swimming as they are currently training. You are welcome to ‘join’ the other sports and activities too and familiarise yourself with the information on the pages in preparation for these Sports commencing in 2021.

I look forward to meeting parents at our Parent Information Night on Wednesday 3 February. Please check the POD for details about the evening. In the upcoming weeks I will also meet with the new students at morning teas. This is an opportunity for each of us to get to know one another.

Thank you to the many parents who ensured the before and after school arrangements went smoothly this week. Parents are encouraged to drop students in the Drop Off zone (topside of the Primary school gate) for them to walk into the Atrium. Students will wait in the Atrium under teacher supervision and move to their classes at 8:15am. As a school, we encourage the children to be independent throughout their school day. Therefore, we request that parents do not accompany their child to the classroom so that each child is responsible for organising herself.

In the afternoons, a teacher is on gate duty in Butler Street, (Monday to Thursday until 3:40pm, Friday until 3:30pm); however, no teacher is on duty in Lapraik Street. For safety purposes, we request that children and adults are not to go to the rear of the vehicle to load bags. Instead, bags are to be placed inside the car. Please note that this area is a 2-Minute Zone and is a set down and collection point only. Parents of students in Years 1-6 are kindly requested to not park there and walk into the school but to meet your child outside Gate 4 or in the pickup line. These arrangements are in place to help reduce the congestion at the school crossing. All procedures are posted on the POD for clarification.

Four parking bays are allocated to Pre-Prep parents for drop off and pick up for a maximum of 10 minutes. We request that only Pre-Prep parents park in these bays (maximum of 10 minutes) with their permit on display in their car.

Music Day Camp

On Sunday 7 February, the Music Department will be holding a Day Camp for students involved in the following Secondary Music Ensembles: Stradivari Strings, Chamber Strings, Jackson Wind Ensemble, Sister Helen Wind Symphony and Exultate. The focus of the Day Camp is two-fold; the day is an opportunity for students to spend time rehearsing new repertoire in the lead up to Open Day, and it will also allow students to further build friendships with others in the Music Program. The day will run from 9:00am-3:30pm and we will look forward to having all girls involved. A letter with further information is attached (PDF 139.2KB).

Music Staff News

A very big welcome to new staff who will be joining us in 2021. We welcome Mr Bernardo Alviz who will be teaching double bass and assist with the Years 3 and 4 Strings Program, and Ms Laura Jones who will teach trumpet. We also welcome back Mr Alex McPherson who will be teaching cello and will also assist with the Years 3 and 4 Strings Program.

We farewell Mrs Kerry Riley who has been teaching piano at ̨ž³UUÖ±²¥’s for the past three years. Mrs Riley has secured a Primary classroom teaching position at Albany Creek State School for 2021 and we wish her all the best in this new role. Mr Michael Gillespie will be taking leave during Term 1 and we are in the process of recruiting a guitar teacher to take on this role during his absence.

Private Music Lessons will start in Week 2

On Friday 29 January during lunchtime, students from Year 5-12 are asked to come to the Sister Helen Orchestra Room (SHOR) to meet their private music teacher and arrange a lesson time for Week 2. If a student is in a younger grade, or is unable to attend that day, the music teacher will contact parents/students directly to arrange a lesson time. A list will be up outside of SHOR with the name of each girl’s private music teacher. (It is not too late to enrol your daughter in private music lessons. Please should you wish to pursue this.) Private Music lessons will start from Week 2.

There have been many requests from parents for lesson times to occur outside of school time. Whilst every effort will be made to accommodate these requests, it may not always be possible. Older students in the Secondary school are always given first preference to these time slots. Thank you for your understanding in this matter.

Music Ensemble Rehearsals will start in Week 2

Rehearsals for most Music ensembles will commence from Week 2 and we are looking forward to having many girls involved! Ensemble lists have been placed on the String, Band and Choral POD pages. The 2021 rehearsal timetable is also available on the POD page.

Choirs: Choirs will begin rehearsals in Week 2, with the exception of Encorah and Volare. Please note that Encorah and Volare will commence rehearsals from the start of Term 2 upon completion of the school musical. Exultate will still however rehearse during Term 1, Thursdays 3:30-4:30pm. (Exultate is an auditioned choir for students in Years 9-12. If your daughter is new to ̨ž³UUÖ±²¥’s and would like to audition for this choir, she is encouraged to contact Mr King to arrange an audition time.)

String Ensembles: All String Ensembles will commence rehearsals in Week 2. Please check the Strings POD page for ensemble lists. If students are interested in participating and have not yet auditioned, please contact the Music Department in order to arrange an audition time.

Band Ensembles: All Band Ensembles will commence rehearsals in Week 2. Please check the Bands POD page for ensemble lists. If students are interested in participating and have not yet auditioned, please contact the Music Department in order to arrange an audition time.

Rock Bands: Rock Band starting dates will be confirmed soon.

Music Support Group

The ̨ž³UUÖ±²¥’s Music Support Group is a committee of dedicated parents who meet regularly to support the girls who participate in the school’s Music Program. The Music Support Group organises and assists with refreshments at school concerts and fundraises to purchase a range of instruments/equipment to enhance the department’s resources. The first meeting for 2021 will be next week, Tuesday 2 February at 5:00pm in the Primary Music Room (second floor of Chaseley). Parents from both the Primary and Secondary Schools are welcome to attend.

All girls have the opportunity to experience this unique sporting culture by registering their intention to participate for one or more sports on offer in Terms 1 and 2. Trials for sports will be dispersed across Weeks 2 and 3 with information being available on individual Sport POD pages. Swimming Camp

On Wednesday 20 January, 97 girls from Years 7 to 12 arrived at ̨ž³UUÖ±²¥’s to participate in a three-day Swim Camp. The camp, led by Head Coach Kevin Sargent, provided all participants an opportunity to develop their swimming technique, fitness and team spirit through various swimming sessions, fitness classes and team building activities. These included team meetings, a scavenger hunt, a day at Wet‘n’Wild and a visit from guest speaker, Mike Tyler who was a nationally ranked swimmer and now magician.

Special thanks to all the parents who provided the annual Support Group Beach BBQ on Friday 22 January. Additional thanks to Swimming Coordinator, Mrs Susan Uhlmann, Teacher Assistants, Mr Karl Mandla and Ms Tammy McGinley, as well as the Assistant Coaches who assisted with all camp activities throughout the week.

The camp has provided the building blocks on yet another successful ̨ž³UUÖ±²¥'s Swim Team and I look forward to all girls achieving their absolute personal best in 2021.

Water Polo State Titles

Congratulations to all students who represented ̨ž³UUÖ±²¥’s or their club at the recent Water Polo State Titles held at the Gold Coast Aquatic Centre. ̨ž³UUÖ±²¥’s was impressive within the Under 14 competition against strong competition and will move into the BWPI season with newly acquired confidence. Thanks to Water Polo Coordinator, Ms Talia O’Callaghan, Coach, Barclay Anderson and parents for their support.

District and Regional Sport Information

A POD page specifically designated to Representative Sport is now accessible. Previously the Metropolitan North Secondary School Sport POD page was accessed through Secondary Sport. Please note that the Met North POD page is now an independent page for registration. If members already have access to this page, please ensure that you modify settings to ensure you receive notifications when news items and nominations for trials are released. New members, please ensure your settings allow you to receive notifications via phone and/or email.

Representative Sport opportunities are occurring over the next 4 weeks and it is very important for those wishing to trial to be aware of the nomination time frames. There are some changes to the nomination process this year which will be provided on the ̨ž³UUÖ±²¥'s Met North POD page shortly. The following sports are currently requesting nominations:

• Volleyball 12-15 Years and 16-19 Years
• Tennis 13-19 Years
• Squash 10-19 Years

Any girls wishing to nominate for the above sports must nominate through the Activities Office.

2020 was certainly a unique year for ̨ž³UUÖ±²¥’s, but amidst the challenges faced with the COVID pandemic, many wonderful things have been achieved. It is fantastic to see the Sports Precinct completed and up and running, already well utilised by the girls, a project which could not have happened without the support of our community – thank you.

We are so grateful for the continued support to the Scholarship Fund which makes an enormous difference to families affected by hardship, including as a result of the COVID pandemic. These students may not otherwise have had the opportunity to experience a ̨ž³UUÖ±²¥'s education.

It has truly been comforting to witness the solidarity that has emerged in response to the pandemic in 2020; the ̨ž³UUÖ±²¥’s community certainly knows the importance of supporting each other through these times. We realise that many of our much-loved events, particularly those run by the P&F Association, were not able to happen last year, but we hope that 2021 will enable us to offer these experiences again. There is never a guarantee, but we know we will be able to adapt, as we have done time and time again.

We look forward to hopefully seeing you all at events throughout the year and working with you to continue to achieve great things for ̨ž³UUÖ±²¥’s in 2021!

NOTICE is given that the Annual General Meeting of the ̨ž³UUÖ±²¥’s P&F Association Inc. is to be held on Monday 22 February 2021 in the Arts Centre Foyer at 6:30pm.

NOMINATION FOR POSITION: Any one member of the P&F shall be at liberty to nominate any other member to serve as an officer or other member of the Management Committee.

If you are interested in joining the P&F Association, all positions of the Management Committee will be declared vacant at the AGM and a new committee for 2021 will be elected.
