From the Principal

Last week we had our Scholars’ Assembly where we celebrated those students in 2021 who achieved an ATAR of 90 and above. In preparation for the assembly, the graduates gave us the gift of invaluable advice borne of the experience of 17- and 18-year-old students studying the Queensland Certificate of Education. All Years 11 and 12 students received a hard copy of this advice in booklet form, and this information is available for other grades from Year 5 on the POD. I mention this so that you, too, can encourage your daughters to read the advice; it is useful advice which can be very helpful, particularly throughout the secondary years.

American researcher Jean Twenge has completed significant research into the topic of teen loneliness and has discovered that the upswing in smartphone communication between teens correlates with “a troubling era of sustained declines in happiness and wellbeing” (Twenge et al., 2019). The scope of Twenge et al.’s (2021) study indicates teen loneliness is a persistent issue in 37 countries across five continents.

Twenge et al. (2021) refer specifically to ‘school loneliness’, defined as the “inverse of school belonging or school connectedness”. So, what makes a student ‘lonely’ at school? Technology plays a major role—particularly the use of smartphones for communication via social media. Despite the advantages and efficiencies, researchers caution that digital communication can “foster shallow ties rather than deep ones, which may result in loneliness”.

Twenge et al.’s (2021) finding that girls suffer more than boys from school loneliness places girls’ schools on high alert to support students to develop healthier, more balanced approaches to communication. However, according to Macquarie Marketing Group’s (2020) analysis of 2018 PISA data, students at all-girls’ schools already reported a greater sense of wellbeing and feelings of belonging at their school. The positive trend continues in a large-scale survey conducted by Mission Australia (2020), which found students at girls’ schools had maintained their higher levels of mental (and physical) wellbeing during the pandemic. Similarly positive were results released after psychometric assessment of UK students, where girls’ school students recorded “significantly higher than average” levels of “mental toughness”—a form of resilience characterised by confidence and emotional control.

These statistics indicate that the social environment coupled with girl-focused wellbeing programs of girls’ schools are somehow mitigating certain negative effects of smartphone use—not to mention of the pandemic. It appears that the ‘sense of belonging’ and ‘sisterhood’ experienced by students at girls’ schools offers some protection against the loneliness of a digitally driven generation.

From the Deputy Principal

One of the important things our teachers emphasise within their classrooms from Pre-Prep all the way through to Year 12 is for our students to have a ‘growth mindset’. A growth mindset drives motivation and achievement. It is about a student’s attitude to failure and being able to take the results of a setback on board and use them to grow and improve. In the primary school, the students talk about being in the ‘learning pit’, which is related to this concept of having a growth mindset, because it acknowledges that the pathway to learning often means that mistakes and misunderstandings can occur prior to true and deep understanding and skill acquisition.

Stanford Professor Carol Dweck developed the concept of a growth mindset after observing thousands of students’ behaviours in relation to failure, and which of those students were best able to go on and achieve success in what they were learning. She found that there were some students who were devastated by failure, saw it as a real setback and were unable to move on. Those who were able to move on, took the feedback and then used this to adjust their effort or focus were far more successful.

It is a powerful concept, and one that was referred to by one of our Past Student Award winners at our recent awards event. Both our Distinguished Past Student 2022, Christine Wells (’91), and our Young Past Student of Distinction 2022, Grace Tobin (’05), spoke of the lessons they learnt along the way, and how many of these lessons came from mistakes or unplanned occurrences. They also spoke of the advice or ‘feedback’ they received and how important this was in bettering themselves and honing their skills.

So as our students are now settling back into Term 2 and have their feedback from their teachers from the last term, I urge them to look at this feedback and think about what they can take from that feedback to improve and continue to learn and develop their skills.

Last term, I reflected at the Easter Service on a podcast I had been listening to. It was an interview by Brene Brown with Karen Walrond on the power and importance of accessing joy in the midst of struggle. The two friends spoke about how important moments of joy are for building resilience and strength in hard times.

Head of Senior House

The Australian Boarding Schools Association (ABSA) National Boarding Week will be held between 15 and 20 May. It’s a time to celebrate the commitment and wonderful efforts of the ̨��UUֱ��’s boarders, boarding community, and boarding staff.

National Boarding Week is a highlight in our ̨��UUֱ��’s calendar, as we join ABSA in the celebration of the near 190 boarding schools in Australia, who provide world-class educational opportunities for any student, regardless of where they call home. Here at ̨��UUֱ��’s, we have students all over the world and we celebrate this. We look forward to showcasing our boarding way of life and spirit to the wider school community.

In this week we will schedule special events that will be led by boarding staff and students. To start our May month, we have our Boarder/Day long weekend, a dedicated weekend to provide the opportunity for day girls to be invited to our boarders' homes.

Physical Activity

There is a significant amount of research on the multifaceted benefits of physical activity. The Australian Government advocates that children and young people are involved of a minimum of 60 minutes per day of movement that increases heart rate. Physical activity has been shown to build self-esteem and confidence, lower anxiety and stress, assist with concentration and promote healthy growth and development, among other things.

While all students should be exercising outside of school hours, ̨��UUֱ��’s also provides opportunities for physical activity via the Core PE program. This program is particularly beneficial to those students who don’t play organised sport and who may therefore not reach the recommended amounts of physical activity in a week. Included in the eNews this week is a more detailed article from our Head of Faculty - Physical Education, Helen Lobegeiger, on the benefits of exercise for adolescent girls.

Year 11 Academic Progress Meetings

A reminder that all Year 11 students are to book in an academic progress meeting with me. In these meetings, we will discuss their Year 11 progress, including Unit 1 results, goals for 2022 and subjects. Parents are welcome to attend these bookings and students can make them via the Year 11 POD page. I have recently added additional times due to my absence this week. A reminder to girls that if they are unable to attend then they should cancel their meeting and/or email me to let me know.

̨��UUֱ��’s is committed to the professional development of our staff, but also of the profession more broadly. As such, we believe strongly in contributing to the development of our staff and of future professionals in education. Due to this commitment, ̨��UUֱ��’s welcomes the opportunity to have pre-service teachers in our school, who learn through active role modelling and exposure to real practical experience in the classroom, while also enabling us to engage with current developments in tertiary education. This term the following staff will be hosting pre-service teachers from QUT: Ms Patrice Chappell, Mr David Gravino, Mr Chris Forster, Ms Dominique Nielson, Mr Adrian Walker, Ms Kirsty Krynauw, Ms Helen Lobegeiger, Ms Zerlina Cheng, and Ms Georgia O’Brien.

These members of staff will be working with the pre-service teachers to develop their skills in preparation for the demands connected with the teaching profession. These experiences are very powerful in that they provide real opportunities for the pre-service teacher to develop their proficiency in planning, organisation, classroom management, and teaching practice.

I would like to welcome the pre-service teachers to ̨��UUֱ��’s, and thank the supervising teachers for supporting these new teachers entering our wonderful profession.

Social Media

They love it! And often it seems that they can’t live without it. The rise of social networking sites has teens throughout the world fanatical about these addictive websites. Social networking is a platform of online sites that focus on building relationships among people who may share the same interest or activities. It provides a way for users to interact over the Internet. Users are often identified by their profiles, which can consist of photos and basic information, such as location, likes and dislikes, as well as friends and family. Well-known sites such as Facebook, Snap Chat and Instagram have taken social networking to a new level. In addition to the convenience of being able to access these websites from a computer, there are also applications on mobile devices that make it easy to access social applications anywhere and anytime.

As a parent, you want to make sure your child is safe when she is engaged in social networking. You may find it challenging to keep up with the ever-changing technology. You may also feel like your child is much more Internet savvy than you are, and in fact, that may be true! But as savvy as your child may be, she may not be aware of the dangers of online networking and what precautions she should take to stay safe. It is important to talk to your child about social networking safety and how to interact appropriately online.

As part of our enduring commitment to the education and awareness of online safety, the Pastoral Care Team are constantly educating the students about their digital footprint. If you would like any further information regarding this please go to the POD, parent resources then to School TV.

Head of Faculty - Physical Education

Participation in sport and physical education for children and adolescents is vitally important as it develops physical literacy and embeds good exercise habits which leads to a life of health and wellbeing. Unfortunately, reports indicate that girls’ motivation, confidence and enjoyment of sport and physical activity significantly reduces during their teenage years (Australian Sports Commission, 2017). This decline can be attributed to the significant physical, emotional and social changes that occur at this time. It is during this stage that girls have reported feeling scrutinised when playing sport or participating in physical education class.

Such feelings include:

Not being good enough
Being too sporty
Judged over body changes such as breast development, periods and body hair
Wanting to appear feminine and attractive but also competent

These feelings can cause negative attitudes to form towards sport and physical education classes, which can ultimately lead to absences or consistently ‘forgetting’ their sports uniforms.

The Health and Physical Education Faculty recognises the challenges the teenage years pose, especially when girls are navigating significant changes including menstruation when participating in physical activity. Therefore, awareness and education on the direct benefits of being physical active during this time is emphasised within classes and will be discussed on upcoming Year Level Assemblies for Years 9 and 10. The benefits of being physically active at this time include the following:
Decrease in menstrual pain and cramps
Decrease in mood disturbance
Decrease in fatigue
Increase in confidence

Engagement in physical education and sport has never been more important and the HPE Department is dedicated to supporting all girls maximise their participation so that they can lead active and healthy lives in the future.

Student Wellbeing Coordinator

On Monday 9 May, ̨��UUֱ��’s will host the first in a series of student forums on the topical question of What's Wrong with Tik Tok?! This event, curated by The Brisbane Dialogues, is an exciting civic and pedagogic initiative to stimulate collaborative discussions on complex topics among teenagers and school communities. The program is intended to encourage civic-mindedness and civil discourse among students and demonstrate within school and local communities what genuine dialogue looks like.

Our first Dialogues forum, featuring selected speakers from across the secondary school, will be moderated by our guest Theodora Le Souquet. Theodora specialises in the development and facilitation of strategy as a current director of Canaria Technologies and ProPerformance. She is a member of the McKinsey Global Online Executive Panel and the Australian Institute of Company Directors. The forum will run from 3.30pm until 5.00pm in the Loft, and all members of the ̨��UUֱ��’s community are invited and encouraged to attend. We hope to see you there in what promises to be a wonderful and stimulating afternoon.

Last week, the term commenced with two special whole school assemblies. The first one held was the annual Scholars’ Assembly. This was a wonderful assembly acknowledging our 2021 Year 12 students who achieved 90 and above ATAR scores.

It was affirming to see that 18 of these 54 students had attended ̨��UUֱ��’s Primary School. It was reassuring for the primary staff to see that the foundation for their life long educational journey began in our primary school.

On Friday, the primary school also conducted the ANZAC Day service. Members of the SRC shared information about the symbols of ANZAC Day. A special thank you to the SRC girls and to Ms Box for their organisation.

We were fortunate to have ̨��UUֱ��'s parent Lieutenant Shane Bliss address the assembly on the relevance of ANZAC Day. He reminded the girls about the relevance of ANZAC Day and stated: "The example set on that first ANZAC Day has carried through history to us today and there is so much to take from it. So, you may well ask, 'How does this apply to me here at ̨��UUֱ��’s?' How do the lessons of the ANZAC legacy apply to a Prep student, a Year 6 girl, or even a senior student? Let me tell you...

Every time you selflessly act to help someone
Every time you defend your friends and stand up to a bully, or call out behaviour that you know is not right
Every time you do this, you show the same courage that ANZACs demonstrated when they defended countries that had been bullied and invaded by stronger forces.

When you work as a team to achieve good things, you honour the ANZACs.

We will all benefit greatly from serving our community, sacrificing some of our time to help others and ensure the wellbeing of our mates."

This message shared by Lieutenant Shane Bliss, representative of the Clayfield-Toombul RSL, aligns with one of our school values – Courage.

Assistant Head of Primary - Curriculum

In Weeks 6 and 7, students in the primary school will participate in the second round of MAP Growth assessment (Reading and Mathematics) for 2022. MAP Growth is a computer adaptive assessment, meaning the software adjusts to each student’s learning level, providing a unique set of questions based on their responses to previous questions. If a student gets a question incorrect, the next question will be easier. If a student gets a question correct, the next question will be harder.

MAP Growth measures what students know and what they don’t know, regardless of their year level. This helps our teachers adjust their instruction to meet the students’ needs. It also measures growth over time, allowing us to track their progress throughout the school year and across multiple years.

We look forward to sharing your daughter’s growth at the Term 3 parent teacher interviews.

Student congratulations – Lily Song

Congratulations to Lily Song (Year 9) who was accepted into the prestigious Australian Youth Orchestra National Music Camp which was held last week at the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music. The AYO National Music Camp brings together the top young musicians from around the country ranging in age from 14 to 22 and is an intense week of musical experiences involving tutorials, sectionals, chamber groups rehearsals and tutti orchestra rehearsals. Rehearsals began every day at 9:30am and concluded at 9:30pm. The week culminated in several performances given in the spectacular Melbourne Recital Centre. Lily was the youngest member of her orchestra and is to be congratulated on her involvement in this elite national music program.

Thank you to Tara Krakat who gave a beautiful performance of Meditation by French composer Jules Massenet at the recent Old Girls’ Association Past Students Awards Dinner. Tara was accompanied by Mr Jonny Ng and the performance was appreciated by everyone in attendance. Thank you also to the Sculthorpe String Quartet for entertaining guests as they arrived.

Practice-a-thon

A reminder that it is not too late to sign up for the inaugural ̨��UUֱ��'s Practice-a-thon! This fundraiser will run from 2-13 May and will require students to commit to practising for a certain amount of time each day during the allotted two-week period. Students will register the amount of time they will practise each day and will seek donations from family and friends to support them in their commitment to daily practice. Attached is a flyer (PDF 206KB) containing further information, including the link to the MyCause page where students can register their involvement. Below also is a QR code which will provide the link to the page. All students who sign up and raise funds will go into a draw for special prizes. Prizes for secondary students include an Apple watch, Airpods, and Movie Vouchers, and prizes for primary students include an Instax Mini (Polaroid Camera), Star Projector and movie vouchers. We look forward to hearing lots of music practice over the coming weeks!

The ̨��UUֱ��’s Music Department is very excited to present our annual Classics in the Cathedral concert. Classics in the Cathedral will be held this year on Friday 27 May in St John’s Anglican Cathedral at 7.00pm. This is a spectacular evening of beautiful music, performed within the stunning setting of St John’s Cathedral and is one of the ̨��UUֱ��’s Music Department’s most anticipated events. We are also excited to welcome back Xanthe Lowe-Brown (‘18) who recently completed her Bachelor of Music in Melbourne and will perform on guitar as part of the evening’s program. Tickets will be available for sale via TryBooking from 10 May (and a day earlier for parents of Year 12 students). Details regarding the purchase of tickets will be made available next week.

Interhouse Cross Country

The Secondary School Interhouse Cross Country Carnival held on Tuesday 19 April was a brilliant afternoon of competition, participation and spirit. It was fantastic to see all students getting involved and contributing towards their house. The action didn’t just stop at the finish line; our senior students continued their competitive spirit onto the hotly contested tug-of-war challenge, where Chaucer was victorious. A big thank you to the staff who assisted as course marshals and officials which made the carnival run smoothly and efficiently.

Most of our Year 10 students have now completed their Career Avenues Profile meetings held during Week 1 and the beginning of Week 2 of this term. It has been wonderful to hear such positive reports about these meetings. Any student who is yet to meet with a Career Avenues specialist is encouraged to reach out to Ms Holley to reschedule their appointment. Students are also encouraged to pick up a hard copy of their profiles from the Heads of Year Office. Year 10 students will now commence their Career Action Plans using their Profiles and feedback from their career’s meetings.

Individual meetings continue this week with Year 12 students meeting with Mrs Ward to discuss general ideas about their future, check pre-requisite requirements, and offer information and assistance with tertiary applications. All meetings will take place in the Student Pathways & Futures Office, in the Eunice Library, during the school day and can be booked via the on the POD page. Parents are welcome to attend but this is not compulsory.

What Matters? Competition

What Matters? is a ‘catalyst for young thinkers and young writers to develop a perspective, a point of view, on where we’re heading as a society’.

Inspired by Gough Whitlam’s commitment to involving young people in the shaping of Australia’s future, the competition is currently open to school students in years 5 to 12 from Australia. Responding to the simple question ‘what matters?’, entrants are free to express their views on any matter they care about.

To enter What Matters? students submit an original written work between 400-600 words in prose or poetry, of either fiction or non-fiction.

Entries are open until Friday 6 May.

Future Leaders Writing Prize 2022

The Future Leaders Writing Prize is designed to recognise and reward talented young writers. It aims to encourage expressive and creative writing. Year 11 and 12 students in Australian secondary schools are invited to submit a piece of writing (800 to 1,000 words). The writing can be fiction or non-fiction and on any topic. In 2022, the award winner will receive $1,000. Where there is more than one winner the prize money will be shared. The winners of the Future Leaders Writing Prize will have their work published.

CQUni I Pathway to Medicine

CQU’s Bachelor of Medical Science (Pathway to Medicine) provides a dedicated provisional entry pathway into UQ’s Doctor of Medicine. Delivered regionally at CQU’s Bundaberg and Rockhampton campuses, this course is an Australian first university hospital partnership between CQU, UQ and the Central Queensland and Wide Bay Hospital and Health Services. You’ll need to sit the UCAT for entry into this course. Bookings are open now and close on 17 May, so make sure you book ASAP. Find out more:

QUT Future You STEM

QUT Future You is set to teach students the importance of a STEM mindset, helping to guide a new generation of leaders, entrepreneurs, and innovators to build the jobs of Australia’s future.

QUT Future You includes the STEM Summit and STEM Internships and is open to high-achieving Year 11 and 12 high-school students. Delivered in the September school holidays, both events will offer students the opportunity to expand their skill sets beyond the classroom and explore future career ambitions with like-minded peers, all before university.

The Future You four-day program also includes a program of:

inspiring keynotes with high-profile speakers interactive Q&A panel sessions featuring local industry leaders, entrepreneurs and researchers QUT alumni, academics, and current students speaking about how they use their STEM mindset every day.
