̨ž³UUÖ±²¥

These girls face poverty and 44 per cent of girls are forced into a marriage before they turn 18. As they remarked to the assembly, they believe that every girl has the right to an education; however, it is estimated that more than 130 million girls around the world are not in school.

One Girl is determined to change this by not only providing scholarships for girls to attend school, but also focusing on empowering young women through education. They have recently started a business program that has reached over 13,000 girls. To support One Girl, the philanthropy group, led by Ms Alford, has raised $1150 at Free Dress day as well as at the cross country, swimming carnival and the Open Day Bake Sale.

In their philanthropy role, Laura and Amy also kept us up-to-date about the student fundraising in the ̨ž³UUÖ±²¥'s community this year: The Year 7s have been working on their community passport service by writing letters to grandparents. Also led by Reverend Nicki, the Year 8s have been completing service hours by helping at chapel services. Recently, some Year 8s participated in part of the Red Shield Appeal with Churchie where $10000 was raised to support the social welfare programs of The Salvation Army.

The Year 9s have been working hard and have raised over $1000 for birthing kits so far and the Year 10s have been completing their service hours by doing individual tasks. Year 11 students have sold lolly bags to raise money for the Australian Children's Tumour Foundation; their donation was made in memory of their fellow classmate, Olivia Campbell. They have so far raised over $266. The Year 11s have also been responsible for Miles for Minotti and $1644 was raised for the Minotti Trust Fund. They are also preparing for Sony Camp at the end of Term 3, where they will be caring for children with special needs.

The Year 12s raised over $1,200 for the Heart Foundation at the Valentine's Day celebration. Also, the Ponytail Project will be coming up in Term 3 on Thursday 9 August. For those who are unfamiliar with the Ponytail Project, it is a significant event in the ̨ž³UUÖ±²¥'s calendar where secondary girls can cut their hair to make wigs for cancer patients. In addition, Semester 2 will see further fundraising activities for One Girl as well as the World Vision 40-hour famine.

The secondary Antipodean students also took opportunities to fundraise through an Easter Raffle and Bake Sale.

It was interesting to hear their summary of the secondary efforts in the areas of fundraising and service. The primary school has also been busy. Like the secondary students, their participation in the Free Dress days have supported Bush Ministry and One Girl, and they too participated in the Easter egg drive, alongside the secondary students, as an initiative of TocH. Also, the primary students take responsibility for sponsoring a Smith Family child and hosted a cake stall this week to raise funds for this sponsorship. Next term, they are looking forward to their biggest fundraiser, the Spell-a-thon.

Recently, I read an article in a magazine from the Association of Heads of Independent Schools that spoke about the importance of promoting philanthropy in schools. The author, Gavan Woinarski (2018), acutely defines philanthropy as “the love of humankind”. He describes the act of philanthropy as the giving of time, information, goods, services and money to improve the wellbeing of humanity and the community. He also states that when someone is described as philanthropic, it says more about their character and values than their wealth. ̨ž³UUÖ±²¥’s is certainly providing the opportunities and the example so that all students can develop their character and values in this way.

A lot of thought and discussion goes into creating the subject lines and the initial subject preference submissions, including data from previous years and a Year 11 subject selection survey that was issued to all Year 10s, as well as taking into account staffing and student numbers. Families are encouraged to read these curriculum handbooks and consider their subject choices.

In 2018, we introduced subject minors and majors as elective choices in Years 9 and 10. This allows students to continue to get a taste of various subjects within these year levels, while also providing the opportunity for depth of skill and understanding that will be required before entering the new Queensland Certificate of Education system in Year 11, 2021. Students remain in these subjects for two years (Years 9 and 10) before choosing their subjects for senior study from Year 11.

Parents and students are encouraged to come to the Subject Selection Evening so they feel confident when making their selections. This will be a great opportunity for all parents to also learn of the changes we are making to our courses to bring us in line with the requirements of the new QCE system for tertiary entry.

Jeff provided significant insight into the reality of our future and challenged us to ask the question:

 “How do we as educators and parents understand and build transformational education experiences that elegantly transition beautiful young learners into resilient and adaptive mega-professionals?”

A mega-professional was defined as a professional empowered by specialist and transferable knowledge, skills, ethics and membership. The findings centred around four megatrends: people and culture; social and natural environment; economics and business; and progress and innovation.

Throughout the seminar, Jeff drew on several sources to provoke our thinking about the skills our young people will need for a changing future. His statistics highlighted the rising probability that many jobs will become computerised and automated in the next 10 to 15 years, so if we want young people to capitalise on ... opportunities and navigate the challenges brought by ... changes, they need a set of transferrable enterprise skills. The focus ... is breadth – breadth of skills, breadth across ages, and breadth of learning opportunities both in and out of school (The Committee for Economic Development of Australia, 2015).

In response he proposed the following sociocultural action list for education, technology and graduate outcomes in response to the megatrends:

At ̨ž³UUÖ±²¥’s, students are already building these knowledge and skills across the megatrends; however, it can be quite confronting to acknowledge they are proposed as our basic skills for life-long learning. Interestingly though, Jeff showed some footage of advanced dynamic robots from Boston Dynamics, so I went to their website to find out how they promote their workforce and employ people … or robots. I was eager to see whether there were some important messages for our girls to consider as they make important subject selections. Bookings for Parent/Teacher interviews will be facilitated in Parent Lounge. The booking system will be open to parents at 9.00am on Monday 18 June and close at 9.00am on Wednesday 11 July.

Please read the details below for booking these interviews. Please note that due to leave, the following staff are unavailable for Parent/Teacher Interviews: Ms Shirley Patton, Mrs Nan Dodd, Mrs Kathy Thorne and Mrs Vicki Strid. 

There is also a number of staff who are part-time and may not be available. These staff are Angela Bowen, Naomi Holley, Jolie Cowan, Alison Davis, Jane Hacking, Margot Johnson, Helen Rath, Faye Ryan, Margot Shave, Jenny Lishman and Lisa Smith. If you would like to speak to a staff member who is part-time and you cannot find a time to book to see them, please email them directly and they will organise a time to meet with you at another time.

Length of Interviews

Parents are able to book in to see each of their daughter’s subject teacher for one eight minute time slot per subject. During the interviews a warning bell will sound at 7 minutes and 45 seconds, with a bell then to signal the end of the interview time. Please be aware many teachers will have interviews in all time slots, so please ensure you stay within your allocated time. If further discussion is needed, parents are requested to set up a time to meet with the teacher at a later date.

Venue

To accommodate all parents, all interviews are scheduled for the Philip Harris Sports Centre. Maps of staff seating will be available on the day. Therefore, it is suggested you arrive 5 to 10 minutes before your first interview to ensure you know where you need to go to allow for smooth transitions between interviews.

To access these interview bookings, please log into Parent Lounge through the POD and click on the link for Parent Teacher Interviews. Bookings open at 9.00am on Monday 18 June. Please be aware of the closing date for the booking system as no bookings can be taken after this date.

Please note that in the final week of term, teachers will be starting new work for Semester 2 and giving assessment feedback. When your daughter misses class work at any stage during the term, it is her responsibility to follow up on missed work with her teacher.

We often underestimate the mutual value of spending time with our grandparents and people from older generations, yet the benefits these intergenerational relationships offer are endless, for all involved. They are best described as the reciprocal sharing of knowledge, experience, values and skills, between people of different generations. Intergenerational learning promotes respect and understanding, builds empathy, inclusiveness and self-worth. In authentic learning situations, it provides opportunities for both parties to exploit the positive resources that both the younger and older generations can offer each other.

We have hosted Grandparents Morning in the primary school for many years and it is always a highlight for staff and students and especially grandparents! The philosophy behind this day is to celebrate and acknowledge the significant role these people play in our lives. It is an opportunity for our grandparents to get involved in the important work our students are doing at school and to share a love of learning with the people who care deeply for their grandchildren.

We are declaring the last week of Term 2 – “Grandparents Week” – and invite you to not only attend our concert and morning tea on the Thursday 21 June but to come into the classroom on Monday or Tuesday and see the children “in action”. A timetable of classroom events is below for your perusal.

Book Fair

From Friday 15 June to Thursday 21 June, the primary school will once again be holding our much-anticipated Book Fair. The Book Fair will be located in the library where students and parents will be able to view and/or purchase the books, every day from 8:00am to 3.45pm. In addition to this, Grandparents and Godparents will be able to purchase books from the Atrium on Grandparents Day, Thursday 21 June.

A wide range of quality books, supplied by The Book Warehouse, will be available to buy from as little as $3.00, with a percentage of all sales going towards the purchase of literacy resources for the primary classrooms and Library.

Payment can be made by cash, credit card or cheque (made payable to The Book Warehouse).

Student performance at St Mark’s Anglican Church

On Sunday 17 June, Akari Komoto (Year 9) will be performing at a special concert at St Mark’s Anglican Church to celebrate 130 Years since the church’s dedication. The concert will begin at 4:00pm with entry by donation. St Mark’s is located at 103 Bonney Avenue, Clayfield. All are welcome to attend.

Upcoming concert by Dr Noble

Dr Noble will be presenting a solo piano performance on Saturday 16 June in the Arts Centre Foyer starting at 5pm. This will be a wonderful opportunity to hear Dr Noble perform as well as celebrate his recently awarded PhD! Dr Noble will be presenting repertoire by Alberto Ginastera, Philip Glass, Agnes Obel and Nigel Sabin. The cost to attend is $10 adults, $5 students/children, $20 family, with all proceeds donated to the Archbishop’s PNG Earthquake Appeal. All are welcome to attend!

Music Support Group

The next Music Support Group meeting will be on Tuesday 31 July at 5:00pm in the Primary Music Room (second floor of Chaseley). Parents from both the primary and secondary schools are welcome to attend.

All girls are to show their house spirit by wearing their house colours on the day and are asked to bring with them a drink bottle, sports hat, sunscreen and lunch.  Girls also have an opportunity to support their house by buying snacks and/or lunch at the charity house stalls. 

The philosophy of participation and enjoyment is paramount to ̨ž³UUÖ±²¥’s sport, therefore, all events at this athletics carnival have been designed to encourage student participation. I invite all parents and friends to support their daughters in attending this event to develop not only house spirit but wonderful school spirit. 

Pierre de Coubertin Award

̨ž³UUÖ±²¥'s along with the Queensland Olympic Council is pleased to announce that Lara Crouch has been awarded the coveted Pierre de Coubertin Award for 2018.  The Pierre de Coubertin Award was named after the founder of the modern Olympic Games. The award recognises students who demonstrate initiative, teamwork, sportsmanship and fair play through participation in a variety of sports in a competitive arena. Lara will be awarded at a Presentation Ceremony during the holidays in July.

̨ž³UUÖ±²¥’s Run

The ̨ž³UUÖ±²¥'s Run has been launched and the Sports Department is calling for girls to register for the race which is a tradition that commenced 19 years ago and is based on the famous ‘Great Court Race’ first run at Cambridge University. The ̨ž³UUÖ±²¥'s Run will be held on the first Friday of Term 3 on July 20 as a part of the ̨ž³UUÖ±²¥’s Day celebrations. The run is a circuit around the school of approximately 800m in length.

The event includes both primary and secondary students with the following divisions:

• Junior Primary Division (Year 3 & 4)
• Upper Primary Division (Year 5 & 6)
• Junior Division (Year 7 & 8)
• Intermediate Division (Year 9 & 10)
• Senior Division (Year 11 & 12)
  
  

The fastest overall time within the secondary divisions will be crowned the ̨ž³UUÖ±²¥'s Run Champion and will be awarded the trophy on Speech Night later this year. QISSN

A select group of girls will represent ̨ž³UUÖ±²¥’s at the Queensland Independent Secondary Schools Netball Carnival in Townsville from 1 July to 6 July.  QISSN is the most popular and prestigious netball carnival in Queensland with 60 schools competing against one another to win the QISSN Cup. In 2017, ̨ž³UUÖ±²¥’s finished in the middle of the field but with an excellent start to the 2018 club season, the team is looking good to secure a higher place this year. Good luck to all girls.

Each year, these awards acknowledge and celebrate the achievements of those students who top the state of Queensland in AMEB Drama and Performance examinations and Trinity College London Speech and Drama examinations in the previous year. Arabella, Lily, Alice and Hannah achieved the highest result in Queensland for their respective AMEB Drama and Performance exams in 2017. A wonderful achievement!

On Saturday, these girls joined other very talented students from throughout Queensland in receiving their awards and performing to a captivated audience. The event included a range of performances including poetry, prose, drama and storytelling.

Eva and Tamika planned and executed flights in accordance with all Civil Aviation regulations. They edited and sequenced their footage to capture the breathtaking experience of the field trip for Year 11 Biology. 

The adoption of drones in industry continues to accelerate. Global mapping company DroneDeploy reported this month that year over year growth in drone usage for agriculture grew by 172% and construction by 239%, and shows no sign of slowing down. While the hobbyist drone operator can fly a sub 2kg drone on private property, the use of drones in a commercial venture requires the operator to hold a Remote Pilot’s Licence, which can cost up to $3000 and necessitates a week of fulltime study. ̨ž³UUÖ±²¥’s Drone Academy can offer the perpetual RePL Licence for only $500 (students must be 15 years or older), through our association with industry leader Wicked Copters. The course takes about 10 weeks to complete, and all theory and practical flying time is completed at ̨ž³UUÖ±²¥’s.

Correspondence from students currently away on exchange

I recently heard from Sophie Gerlach-Zuch, who is on exchange at Shawnigan Lake, Canada.

“This week we had house photos in the quad which meant getting into our formal uniforms on Tuesday evening before playing a field hockey match in which I was named the MVP. On Thursday I was invited to the Dean’s Dinner which is a celebratory event for students who achieve a high level of effort across their academic and extra-curricular courses. This was a lovely night and one I enjoyed immensely with some of the other girls in my house. So far, I have competed in three soccer tournaments, one of which ran over Thursday and Friday this week. Unfortunately, I’m certainly not the next David Beckham so I can’t say that my skills were highly useful on the field as most people need the ball to go forwards when they dribble not trip and let it roll back to the opposition. Nonetheless, playing on the team has been a great experience and has allowed me to make friends across the grades and houses in the school. The weather has been lovely and is starting to warm up which has allowed us to go down to the docks on the lake for a quick swim here and there. This weekend I’m volunteering at a fair for sick children and will hope to see Livy Garland row for Crofton House as she competes at the Shawnigan Regatta. I have much planned over the next few weeks with midterm break just around the corner in a few days.”

The University of Melbourne would like to invite you to attend our at our Parkville campus on Thursday 12 July 9:00am – 6:00pm. Location: University of Melbourne, Parkville, Victoria 3010

The day will focus on aspects of the university that are of greater concern to interstate students such as the application process, scholarships, student services, accommodation options and financial assistance. Participants will have an opportunity to ask current University of Melbourne students who have come from interstate about their experience and how they managed the transition. The program will also include a campus tour followed by a free lunch at one of the residential colleges and a college tour. Optional additional accommodation tours will take place after the official program has ended.

ANU

ANU is changing how we do admissions, making it easier for students to apply to Australia's national university. Students wishing to commence at ANU in 2020 will apply directly to ANU in a single application that covers admissions, scholarships and accommodation.

Timeline

March to May 2019: Students apply to ANU

August 2019: Early outcomes are released, conditional on meeting ATAR requirements, outcomes including admissions, scholarships, and accommodation offer.

We will make early offers to students based on Year 11 results, conditional on achieving the required final OP/ATAR. This means students will know they have a place at ANU much earlier, and they can start planning for their life at university. We'll be at the  on Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 July from 10:00am to 4:00pm both days. Come along and ask us any questions you have about studying at ANU.

QTAC

QTAC applications for current Year 12 students open 2 August. All applications are submitted online via the QTAC website. Some courses have earlier closing dates but the general early closing date is 28 September 2018.

How to apply to interstate tertiary institutions

You can apply for some institutions in Northern NSW and Tasmania through QTAC. . You can access websites for all Australian institutions through the tertiary admission centres listed below.  

You can apply for most interstate courses through state-based tertiary admissions centres. Current Year 12 students can apply from the start of August 2018:

This is a two day course for jazz instrumentalists, jazz voice and popular voice students. Students will explore the performance and ensemble processes helping them build the skills required to audition for entry to the Sir Zelman Cowen School of Music. Changes to Doctor of Medicine program from 2021

The UQ Academic Board have approved changes to the selection process for UQ's Doctor of Medicine (MD) program that will impact current high school students.

 These changes will be progressively introduced over the coming years, allowing students ample time to prepare.

 What are the changes?

There are two main changes to the selection process for the MD Program at UQ:

• The introduction of a Mini Multiple Interview as part of the selection process (only impacting current Year 10 students, or younger)

• The introduction of prerequisite courses to ensure students are well prepared for the first two years of the program (impacting all students)

 
Why the change?

Our revised admission process is designed to ensure the highly sought-after places in the MD program are offered to applicants who demonstrate the attributes and abilities most suited to the profession of medicine, and most likely to succeed in the MD program.

A pathway to medicine at ANU

The Bachelor of Health Science offers a pathway to the postgraduate  at ANU without having to sit the GAMSAT. At the end of their second year in the Bachelor of Health Science up to 30 students will receive an offer of entry to the Doctor of Medicine and Surgery (MChD), contingent upon their grade point average (GPA), an interview process, and successful completion of the Bachelor of Health Science. Ten of the 30 places in the Doctor of Medicine and Surgery (MChD) program are reserved for rural and Indigenous students from the Bachelor of Health Science.

UQ Pharmacy Experience Day - save the date

Pharmacy Experience Day is an annual UQ showcase which invites students to discover where a Bachelor of Pharmacy can take them. Throughout the day guests will take part in a range of hands-on laboratory activities, meet and quiz current students, and participate on a guided tour through the world class facilities.
